Mount Vernon Insider: 2023 Campaign Trail: City of Mount Vernon: Mayor Shawyn Patterson Howard: A Resounding Mandate!

Friends,

Last night, the people of Mount Vernon sent a powerful message and delivered a crystal clear mandate to keep moving our city forward. It’s been 20 years since we had the confidence to re-elect a Mayor, and we took a major step toward that achievement by winning the Democratic Primary so convincingly. We never moved ahead because we kept starting over.

I am so thankful for all of those who have stood with me for four years to bring us to this point. So many of you have worked so hard in our city to make a difference in people’s lives and spread the word about the good work we are doing. And I am deeply grateful to all our supporters, for my team at City Hall, for our campaign workers, and for everyone who volunteered to help keep Mount Vernon moving forward.

Four years ago, we had no choice but to start over because we’d hit rock bottom. But now, the people have had a chance to see us in action for four years and they’ve cast their ballots to move forward together – as a team of strong, independent voices, including re-nominated Councilman Derrick Thompson and Council nominee Jaevon Boxhill. We have said from the beginning that the best politics is good government. I’m so grateful that the people of Mount Vernon agreed.

The people voted for continuity. For leadership. For vision. For a plan. For execution. For actions, not words. For partnership and collaboration. For teamwork. For building something together. And for positivity over cynicism and anger.

Yesterday is a reminder that we need to serve all the people – not with angry words, but with competence, grace, and a commitment to the public good. I haven’t forgotten who I work for, and with your help, we will continue to govern for the people. That includes those who voted for someone else, or didn’t vote at all. I am thankful to all of you for being my neighbors here in the Jewel of Westchester and I pledge to work just as hard for you.

I also need to thank the men and women of the Westchester Putnam Central Labor Body, 1199 SEIU, the Mount Vernon Firefighters, the Mount Vernon Teachers Association, of Moms Demand Action Against Gun Violence, of the League of Conservation Voters, and so many other organizations to name for helping me in this campaign. Thanks are also due to the incredible lineup of Democratic officials who endorsed our campaign, including Governor Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Tish James, Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Jamaal Bowman, Deputy County Exec Ken Jenkins, State Senators Jamaal Bailey and Shelley Mayer, Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, our entire City Council delegation and so many other around Westchester. This clearly was a united Democratic Party victory that positions our city for more progress in the future.

And so it’s on to the fall general election in November. Like everyone else in Mount Vernon, I take nothing for granted! And we will be working hard for your vote.

Thank You Mount Vernon!!! To God be the Glory. Ready to Serve!

With thanks,

Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard

Mount Vernon Insider: 2023 Campaign Trail: City of Mount Vernon: Firefighters endorse... Rally Tomorrow!

Friends,

Some wonderful news to share: the Mount Vernon Uniformed Firefighters Association has endorsed me for re-election, adding a vital and important public safety union to our growing list of labor support.

And tomorrow at 10 am, join us for a massive rally to kick off the last weekend of early voting and build unstoppable momentum going into Tuesday! Our team will be there to greet you at Mount Vernon Democratic headquarters, One Park Avenue. Grab some literature, signs, and selfies with the candidates - canvassing and phone banking to follow. Let’s get this done!

Our firefighters put their lives on the line every day to ensure the safety and well-being of residents. Their work goes well beyond fighting building fires - they respond to traffic accidents and are absolutely crucial first responders in any emergency our city faces. It is a great honor to have them on our side as we work to continue to build measurable and meaningful progress in Mount Vernon.

The firefighters join an increasingly broad alliance of support we are building - including the Westchester Putnam Central Labor Body, 1199 SEIU, New York League of Conservation Voters, Mom Demand Action Against Gun Violence, Eleanor's Legacy, the New York State Nurses Association, District Council 9 of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades, and the Mount Vernon Federation of Teachers.

Remember, early voting has started and continues through Sunday, June 25th at City Hall and the Doles Center. Polls open at 6 am and close at 9 pm on Tuesday, June 27th, at your regular polling place. Tell your friends and neighbors to get out there and vote.

Let’s keep Mount Vernon moving forward together!

Sincerely,
Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard

Mount Vernon Insider: Mount Vernon Mayor Shawyn Patterson Howard: Happy Father's Day!

Friends,

Fathers are protectors, mentors, and friends in our communities. Any man can help create a life, but today we salute those who stepped up to be caretakers, and have committed themselves to supporting the well-being of children, with and without biological ties.

Men with the strength and maturity to father our communities have always existed, even outside of the traditional family structure. Fathering has come from both biological dads, and father figures: uncles, grandfathers, ministers, mentors, community advocates and friends.

Today, I give thanks for the fathers and father figures in my life past and present. I’m grateful for the love, nurturing, faith and fortitude that helped shape me into the woman I am today. I’m thankful for a wonderful husband and partner who is a phenomenal dad to our daughter, Nia and grandpa to our grandson Aiden. I wish him and all of the fathers and father figures in our community who’ve supported and protected us all, a heartfelt Happy Father’s Day.

As you recognize the dads and dad-like figures in your lives, remember that the ultimate goal of fathering, ensuring the health and well-being of our children, to protect a generation, and prepare them for the future. The best way to honor their contributions, is by continuing their crucial work.

Sincerely,
Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard

In that capacity, he managed one of the most successful auctions of City-owned properties ever for the City of Mount Vernon, generating over $3 million in much-needed revenue. In the process, he stabilized neighborhoods by restoring abandoned and blighted properties to the tax roll.

Jaevon then worked as the fiscal analyst for the Westchester County Board of Legislators, and he was part of the team that secured $29.9 million that was used to rebuild Memorial Field. Jaevon is now a Senior Budget Analyst for Westchester County. He oversees and implements an annual budget of over $2.3 billion, funding everything from the county airport, the correctional facility in Valhalla, the county police department, childcare facilities, and first-class parks and green spaces.

A Message from Jaevon

I am committed to restoring the financial stability of Mount Vernon. I will work tirelessly with fellow elected officials and the community to regain our AAA bond rating. A strong credit rating will save taxpayer dollars and allow the city to improve its infrastructure through capital projects.

My goal is to create an environment that fosters economic growth and development. I will explore all possible avenues to help move the city forward, by exploring new revenue sources, securing grants for the city and pursuing cost-saving measures. I will continue to support our local businesses and let it be known that Mount Vernon is a welcoming, business-friendly City.

Together, we will collaborate with community leaders and stakeholders to create a brighter future for our Mount Vernon.

Mount Vernon Insider: 2023 Campaign Trail: Mayor Shawyn Patterson Howard: Another Major Endorsement Update - Hispanic Democrats of Westchester!.

Friends,

The hits keep on coming this week: I am deeply honored to let you know that the Hispanic Democrats of Westchester have endorsed my campaign for re-election in the upcoming Democratic primary!

Our city is the Jewel of Westchester for many reasons, but first among those is the incredible diversity we’re blessed to have in our residents. And our growing Hispanic population adds so much to the culture of Mount Vernon, and brings incredible vibrancy to our neighborhoods.

I am particularly proud of this endorsement because the Hispanic Dems do the hard work of political organizing all around Westchester County. Their collective voice matters. And their political involvement is a truly vital part of what makes the Democratic Party so strong in our City and our County.

Remember, the Democratic primary is on Tuesday, June 27th, with early voting beginning on Saturday, June 17th.

Together we will continue to move Mount Vernon forward.

Sincerely,
Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard

Friends,

I’m thrilled to share our official re-election campaign video with you. Please take a few moments to watch it, and review all the progress we’ve made over the past four years in Mount Vernon.

As the video says, we need to finish this journey together. We’re bringing Mount Vernon back and there are real highlights to celebrate. But there is still much to be done. That’s why I have one major request this morning for all supporters:

Please share this video widely to your friends and family - on social media, and via text and email!

Remind them of the stakes in the June 27th Democratic Primary (with early voting starting June 17th) - improved public safety, transparent finances, better infrastructure, more business and city services that work for our residents. We need to get the word out quickly. And you can help.

Thank you so much, and have a wonderful week. We’re moving Mount Vernon forward together.

Sincerely,
Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard

Mount Vernon Insider: City of Mount Vernon: 2023 Campaign Trail: Mayor Shawyn Patterson Howard: BIG Endorsement: New York State Nurses Association!

I’m deeply honored to tell you that my campaign has earned the endorsement of the New York State Nurses Association!

This endorsement is so important in recognizing our work over the last four years. During the pandemic, I saw first-hand how important nurses were on the frontlines - and how committed these women and men were through the darkest days in recent history. Beyond the pandemic, I also stood with them on the frontlines in the fight to save and improve Mount Vernon Hospital. Together with so many other partners, we kept Mount Vernon hospital open and serving the community.

Because your healthcare matters. Community wellness - including mental health and access to vital services - are a hallmark of my Administration. They matter to Mount Vernon.

So it is a great honor to accept the endorsement of NYSNA.

Thank you for your continued support as we build momentum toward the Democratic primary on June 27th. Early voting begins on June 17th, so make your plan to vote today because every vote matter!

Together we will continue to move Mount Vernon forward.

Sincerely,

Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard
