Mount Vernon Insider: City of Mount Vernon: 2023 Campaign Trail: RIchard Thomas Democrat for Mount Vernon Mayor: Where is the Future in Mt. Vernon?

Dear Mount Vernon,

Meet Jared Smith.

He is a young man who recently graduated from the Mt. Vernon Steam Academy and lives on the South Side of the city. He stopped me and asked, “Where is the future of the youth of Mt. Vernon?”

His question comes from a place of pain as he has lost friends Zyaire Fernandez (14) and Tamani Turner (18) to recent gun violence.

Jared’s simple, yet profound question is at the heart of every citizen’s concern about our beloved Mt. Vernon: "Where is the future for Mt. Vernon?"

The last Mt. Vernon State of the City address did not address this central question. It offered: No vision. No plan. No purpose. And No place for us in Mt. Vernon’s future.

Like Jared, the Mt. Vernon Police Benevolent Association (MVPBA) stated the administration offered a totally false account of the State of Mt. Vernon.

In fact, they said the description by City Hall was a “MAJOR Misrepresentation” and released data showing violent gun crime up a cumulative 150%!

The truth is no one is satisfied with the conditions of Mt. Vernon.

Thankfully over 3,000 Mt. Vernonites signed my petition for Mayor, encouraging me to answer Jared’s question for the sake of Mt. Vernon’s future.

To that end, here is my official video message addressing Jared’s main concerns while debunking City Hall’s false talk. In it, I revisit the past - acknowledging and owning past mistakes. I also take a hard look at today's dangerous conditions to offer you a proven vision with real safety and a results-based plan to reclaim Mt. Vernon's bright future.

For now, I cannot thank you enough… because of dedicated believers like you, we are one step closer to getting on the Democratic ballot for Mayor in the June 27th Primary Election.

The next step is the certification process with the Westchester County Board of Elections. Know that we expect opponents to challenge your right to choose in the upcoming Primary Election; however, we are prepared to defend your access to the ballot box and protect your right to vote!

Stay tuned for updates and calls to action to defend Democracy so we can restore order and reignite growth in Mt. Vernon.

With your continued support and VOTE FOR THE #THOMASPROMISE, we will make Mt. Vernon Safe, Clean, Fun, and Function again!

Redeeming the #ThomasPromise will provide ALL Mt. Vernonites – especially Jared and the next generation – access to a "Future with Purpose" made for us, by us – The People! Only then will everybody know that "The Future is IN Mt. Vernon!"

Yours in Service,

Richard Thomas

Mount Vernon Insider: City of Mount Vernon: 2023 Campaign Trail: Andre Wallace Democrat for Mount Vernon Mayor: LET'S INCREASE PUBLIC SAFETY!

Mount Vernon is in the grip of a rising tide of crime, leaving its residents increasingly vulnerable and unsafe. The recent rally by Save Mount Vernon, aimed at ending gun violence, highlights the urgent need for a state of emergency to be declared and for law enforcement to receive much-needed support. Unfortunately, yet another shooting has occurred yesterday, underscoring the pressing need for action.

The safety and security of Mount Vernon's residents must be the top priority of our elected officials, and we must not rest until lawlessness is eradicated from every corner of the city. It is the government's duty to protect and defend its citizens from violence, and we cannot allow this unacceptable situation to continue any longer.

Once elected, I will:

Invest in the development of our youth with mentoring programs, counseling, and job skill training. It works! After founding the first accredited construction trades school in Mount Vernon, over 1,400 students secured union jobs and elevated their circumstances.

Ensure Mount Vernon becomes a business-friendly location--unemployment factors into high crime. Our city lacks the necessary business development to compete with our surrounding municipalities. Companies relocating to Mount Vernon will employ our residents with livable wages. In addition, corporate and sales taxes will fund job training centers to give the unemployed the necessary skills to obtain good jobs.

Create a support network for formerly incarcerated citizens to assist in housing, counseling, job training and employment.

Create a comprehensive plan with county, state and federal law enforcement agencies to remove illegal guns and other illegal activity off the streets of Mount Vernon.

Hire 40 additional Police Officers within the first 18 months of my administration to effectively increase police presence.

Change police department work schedule from rotating shifts to steady tours promoting officer wellness and reducing overtime cost.

Negotiate salaries and benefits for our Police Officers to be compatible with other municipalities to prevent the continuous "badge drain" of our police department.

Review police policies, procedures, and training to ensure MVPD operates within National Policing Standards.

Obtain grants for city-wide security cameras and gunshot detection systems.

My top priority is to ensure all Mount Vernon residents are safe.

"So let's work together for a better Mount Vernon!"

Dear Neighbors,

I am writing to express my deepest gratitude for your support in getting me on the ballot for the upcoming mayoral election in Mount Vernon. Thanks to your efforts, we were able to collect close to 2500 signatures from our neighbors and voters, which is a significant milestone for our campaign.

As a candidate for mayor, my goal is to make Mount Vernon a better place to live, work, and raise a family. I believe that by working together, we can create a brighter future for all of our residents by increasing public safety, lowering our taxes and improving our quality of life. That's why I'm reaching out to you today to ask for your continued support as we move forward with our campaign.

Whether it's volunteering your time, making a donation, or simply spreading the word about our campaign, your support means the world to me. Together, we can make a real difference in Mount Vernon, and I am committed to working for your best interests every step of the way.
