***NEWS RELEASE***

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – January 26, 2022

MOUNT VERNON MAN SENTENCED TO NINE YEARS IN PRISON FOR VIOLENT SEXUAL ASSAULT.

White Plains, NY -- Westchester County District Attorney Miriam E. Rocah announced the sentencing of a Mount Vernon man who stabbed a woman in the face after he sexually assaulted her.

Hasarn Myke, 40, was sentenced on January 25, 2022, to nine years in state prison, with 15 years of post-release supervision after his pleas of guilty to Attempted Assault in the First Degree as a Sexually Motivated Felony, Attempted Assault in the First Degree, Sexual Abuse in the First Degree, Assault in the Second Degree as a Sexually Motivated Felony, and two counts of Assault in the Second Degree, all violent felonies. He also pled guilty to Unlawful Imprisonment in the Second Degree, a misdemeanor.

Upon his release from prison, Myke will be required to register as a sex offender.

“The victim in this case demonstrated great resilience and fortitude in the face of a terrifying ordeal,” DA Rocah said. “We are grateful that she was able to escape and call for help and hope that this conviction and sentence helps in the healing process. We will continue to fight for victims of violent crime and sexual assault with every means at our disposal.”

On November 20, 2020, at approximately 5 a.m. in a secluded area in Mount Vernon, Myke punched the victim in the face and body, and kicked her in the stomach. He used a knife to remove the victim’s clothing, sexually assaulted her and stabbed her in the face. The defendant then stood the victim up, grabbed her by the back of the neck and forced her to walk naked at knifepoint toward his home. The victim was able to escape to a nearby house, called the Mount Vernon Police Department, and was transported to Jacobi Medical Center in the Bronx.

Mount Vernon Police arrested Myke on November 27, 2020, following an investigation.

The case was before Judge Susan Cacace in Westchester County Court, and was prosecuted by Special Prosecutions Deputy Division Chief Michelle Lopez.

Mount Vernon Insider: City of Mount Vernon City Comptroller Darren Morton: Free COVID-19 Tests Available NOW.

As Mount Vernon strives to set a new direction, it is important for residents of our city to not only be concerned about our financial health but mindful of our own personal health. We all know of the devastation COVID-19 has wreaked upon the world. Most of us know of someone who has been infected or lost the battle to this virus. At-home tests are being offered free of charge to families throughout the nation. Four free at-home tests will be mailed to you simply by ordering them online.

There are two types of tests for COVID-19. Viral tests tell you if you have a current infection, and antibody tests tell you if you've been previously infected. If you’re experiencing symptoms or think you’ve been exposed to COVID-19, contact your health care provider or your state or local public health department to find out where you can get tested. Tests are available at many health centers and some pharmacies. Call in advance to see if an appointment is required. The testing process and timeline for results vary by location.

Please take advantage of this free opportunity and encourage friends and family who have not already done so to get vaccinated and boosted. Protect yourselves and your families by wearing a mask and following COVID-19 safety protocols.

Mount Vernon Insider: Westchester County Legislature: New Chairman of Housing Committee - Legislator Tyrae Woodson-Samuels.

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

At the Westchester County Board of Legislators, we do our work through a committee system.

Every decision we make -- about budgets, parks, roads, new laws, and more -- begins with consideration in our committees. And each of our 14 committees has a particular area of oversight over the rest of County government.

I'm excited that in the 2022-2023 legislative term I will be chairing the Boards' Housing Committee.

Having a committee specifically dedicated to housing gives the Board an important platform to focus on this most essential community need. Affordability is central to that. Westchester’s sustainability requires that we make sure that working people and seniors can afford to live in our communities.

The Committee will be involved in decisions about the use of the historic $50 million capital budget commitment for land acquisition and infrastructure investments to support development of affordable housing this year.  We also need to ensure that COVID-related housing aid programs are working to support residents and building owners as we recover from the pandemic. In addition, we'll be working with the  Human Rights Commission to ensure the implementation of our co-op disclosure law, among other priorities.

I want to thank Chairwoman Catherine Borgia for the opportunity to Chair this committee, and I want to stress how seriously I, our committee members and staff, take our duties and responsibilities.

Committee meetings are expected to begin the week of January 24.  As always, committee meetings will be streamed live on our website.  You can check the “Meeting Calendar” section at www.westchesterlegislators.com for a list of upcoming meetings, links to agendas and other documents, as well as live streaming and archived video.

I look forward to keeping you informed about the committee's upcoming work, and invite you to reach out to me with any thoughts about matters you think our committee should be considering.

Mount Vernon Insider: Mount Vernon City Comptroller Darren Morton: Thank You Mount Vernon.

Today marks a new direction for the Office of the Comptroller. Dr. Darren M. Morton was sworn in and has vowed to put the best interests of the people first as he endeavors to unveil our city's true fiscal standing and develop a roadmap to Mount Vernon's fiscal solvency.

There is much work to do in the coming months. It will take all of us working together to resolve the issues we know of and are yet to be uncovered. We must be patient, not draw conclusion prematurely, and when necessary, ask questions of our Comptroller directly. Dr. Morton will not avoid the difficult truths as he strives to honestly and fairly lead the Finance Department with competence, efficiency and transparency.

We want to thank the special guests who so graciously participated in the Inaugural Program. We appreciate their declarations of support as our city opens a new chapter in its financial history. It was truly a blessing to to have so many join Dr. Morton on this special day.

Now we must begin the hard work. Again, thank you and our blessings for a prosperious and productive New Year for Mount Vernon.
