Mount Vernon Insider: 2023 Campaign Trail: City of Mount Vernon: Mayor Shawyn Patterson Howard: A Resounding Mandate!

Friends,

Last night, the people of Mount Vernon sent a powerful message and delivered a crystal clear mandate to keep moving our city forward. It’s been 20 years since we had the confidence to re-elect a Mayor, and we took a major step toward that achievement by winning the Democratic Primary so convincingly. We never moved ahead because we kept starting over.

I am so thankful for all of those who have stood with me for four years to bring us to this point. So many of you have worked so hard in our city to make a difference in people’s lives and spread the word about the good work we are doing. And I am deeply grateful to all our supporters, for my team at City Hall, for our campaign workers, and for everyone who volunteered to help keep Mount Vernon moving forward.

Four years ago, we had no choice but to start over because we’d hit rock bottom. But now, the people have had a chance to see us in action for four years and they’ve cast their ballots to move forward together – as a team of strong, independent voices, including re-nominated Councilman Derrick Thompson and Council nominee Jaevon Boxhill. We have said from the beginning that the best politics is good government. I’m so grateful that the people of Mount Vernon agreed.

The people voted for continuity. For leadership. For vision. For a plan. For execution. For actions, not words. For partnership and collaboration. For teamwork. For building something together. And for positivity over cynicism and anger.

Yesterday is a reminder that we need to serve all the people – not with angry words, but with competence, grace, and a commitment to the public good. I haven’t forgotten who I work for, and with your help, we will continue to govern for the people. That includes those who voted for someone else, or didn’t vote at all. I am thankful to all of you for being my neighbors here in the Jewel of Westchester and I pledge to work just as hard for you.

I also need to thank the men and women of the Westchester Putnam Central Labor Body, 1199 SEIU, the Mount Vernon Firefighters, the Mount Vernon Teachers Association, of Moms Demand Action Against Gun Violence, of the League of Conservation Voters, and so many other organizations to name for helping me in this campaign. Thanks are also due to the incredible lineup of Democratic officials who endorsed our campaign, including Governor Kathy Hochul, Attorney General Tish James, Senators Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, Congressman Jamaal Bowman, Deputy County Exec Ken Jenkins, State Senators Jamaal Bailey and Shelley Mayer, Assemblyman Gary Pretlow, our entire City Council delegation and so many other around Westchester. This clearly was a united Democratic Party victory that positions our city for more progress in the future.

And so it’s on to the fall general election in November. Like everyone else in Mount Vernon, I take nothing for granted! And we will be working hard for your vote.

Thank You Mount Vernon!!! To God be the Glory. Ready to Serve!

With thanks,

Mayor Shawyn Patterson-Howard
