Mount Vernon Insider: Westchester County Legislator Tyrae Woodson-Samuels 13th District: County Approves More than $163K for Mount Vernon Youth Programs.

Dear Neighbors and Friends,

I'm happy to report that all of my colleagues on the Board of Legislators joined me Monday night in approving more than $163,000 to fund the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau's Safe HavenYouth Empowerment and Step Up programs.

These are some of the best and most valuable programs we have for young people in the city, making a positive impact year after year on the lives of the hundreds they serve.

They are also a great example of County and City government working together to support Mount Vernon families.

Many Mount Vernon families are already well aware of these programs, and the other great work of our Youth Bureau.  But let me tell you a little bit more about the programs the County approved this week:

The Safe Haven After-School program provides academic and homework help in English and Math at the Grimes and Cecil H. Parker Elementary Schools, helping prepare kids ages 7-12 for middle and high school. It also gives them a safe, social place to spend out-of-school time five days a week.

The Safe Haven Summer program -- which this year is also open to six-year-olds -- offers a range of fun and life-enriching experiences that also provide important life skills including field trips, science and tech activities, health and wellness projects, as well as music, arts and crafts.

And Safe Haven's Saturday STEAM Academy gives kids from the 3rd to 8th grades the chance to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math.

The Youth Empowerment Program addresses unemployment by providing after-school and summer jobs to at-risk youth.  That includes young people who are under court supervision, but also young people facing social barriers to employment, by teaching resume and cover letter writing; interviewing skills; conducting mock interviews; completing online job applications; teaching workplace ethics; coaching communication and presentation skills; time and money management; and more.

The Step Up program focuses on young men at risk in Mount Vernon. The open-door program offers one-on-one employment training, tutoring, family counseling, and academic support, and works closely with the city school district and police department to improve relationships with people in authority and help young people refrain from violence and find other means of problem solving.

I want to extend a special thanks to Commissioner Debbie Burrell-Butler and the entire team at the Mount Vernon Youth Bureau for their dedication to the young people of our city.

Sincerely,

Tyrae Woodson-Samuels
