Senator Biaggi Issues Statement Regarding Fatal Stabbing Following Mount Vernon Parade.

MOUNT VERNON, NY – On Friday, April 8th, the Mount Vernon community was notified of a stabbing following the parade celebrating the state championship-winning season by Mount Vernon High School’s basketball team that left one teenager dead and a second victim injured.

State Senator Alessandra Biaggi (D-Bronx/Westchester) issued the following statement:

“I am devastated to learn of this tragedy in Mount Vernon last Friday, and want to extend my deepest condolences to the loved ones of the victim and the entire community. Such an act of senseless violence is unconscionable, and my heart goes out to all of the families impacted. More must be done on a systemic level to ensure the safety and well-being of our youth.

As elected officials, we must focus on counteracting violence amongst the youth in our communities— starting with prioritizing investment for mental health services in schools— ensuring that teachers, counselors, and peers are able to recognize warning signs of children in distress so that tragedies such as this can be prevented before it is too late. We owe it to our students to be better, and that means we must provide them with the proper mental health resources to support their most basic needs.”
