FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Nick Mastrogiorgio Announces Candidacy for Mount Vernon City Council — A Call for Transparency, Accountability, and Real Change

Mount Vernon, NY — Nick Mastrogiorgio, a retired Police Lieutenant, lifelong Mount Vernon resident, and small business owner, has officially announced his candidacy for Mount Vernon City Council. Running as a Democrat in the upcoming June 2025 primary, Mastrogiorgio enters the race with a clear and urgent message: the people of Mount Vernon deserve better.

A fourth-generation Mount Vernon resident, Mastrogiorgio’s roots in the city run deep. His great-grandfather built the family’s home on Terrace Avenue over a century ago. Since then, the Mastrogiorgio family has proudly served Mount Vernon in various capacities—his grandfather in the Department of Public Works for 40 years, his father as a police officer for 24 years, his grandmother in the school system, and his sister and two step-sisters in City Hall and the Police Department respectively.

“I’m not a politician,” said Mastrogiorgio. “I’m a resident, a public servant, and someone who has fought for fairness his entire career. I’m stepping up now because the current City Council has failed the people—raising taxes to unsustainable levels while voting to increase their own salaries. That’s not leadership. That’s self-interest.”

Mastrogiorgio retired as a lieutenant from the Mount Vernon Police Department, where he also served as President of the Police Benevolent Association (PBA). Throughout his career, he advocated for both the safety of his fellow officers and the well-being of the community at large. His leadership emphasized unity, justice, and accountability—principles he promises to bring to City Hall.

In addition to his service in law enforcement, Mastrogiorgio is the founder of MastroTek, a small business offering web design, IT support, and digital marketing to fellow small business owners throughout Westchester County. He previously worked as a business consultant for Citibank and held Series 7, Series 63, and Life/Health Insurance licenses.

If elected, Mastrogiorgio plans to focus full-time on his role as councilman—eschewing outside interests to give his undivided attention to improving city services, infrastructure, and economic fairness. His campaign is centered around the core values of Transparency, Accountability, and Fairness.

Among his top priorities:

Holding the line on property taxes and demanding fiscal responsibility

Reforming PILOT agreements that unfairly shift the tax burden onto residents

Supporting fully staffed and well-resourced public safety departments

Promoting responsible economic development that benefits the entire community

Creating programs to keep Mount Vernon’s youth off the streets and on a path to success

Keeping residents informed through weekly council activity reports and public explanations of every vote he casts

“My campaign is about giving power back to the people,” Mastrogiorgio said. “This will be my only job, and my only boss will be the residents of Mount Vernon.”

Yonkers Insider: Candidate Spotlight: Michael Pineda Republican for Westchester County Legislator 14th District.

First time Candidate Michael Pineda running for Westchester County Legislator in the 14th District to challenge long time Westchester County Legislator David Tubiolo.

Pineda has called himself the Anti Corruption Candidate and also has a philosophy of Community First. Putting the people above Politics as Usual.

Pineda has fought the good fight just to be here to run this race, due to challenges to his signatures collected to make the ballot. Also some members of the Republican machine fought hard to try and help stop Pineda from getting GOP nomination. Pineda got the GOP nomination. All of this speaks to the pure determination of Michael Pineda to run in the race to give the community a voice on the Westchester County Board of Legislators if elected.

The 14th County Legislative District included Parts of Yonkers and Parts of Mount Vernon.

We will be covering this Westchester County Board of Legislators race very closely for our readers.

Mount Vernon Insider: Promotions: Cynthia Turnquest for Mount Vernon City Council.

Gun violence affects us in so many ways homicide, domestic violence, mass shootings, and suicide. Perhaps the most underreported truth is that unsecured guns cause a lot of these deaths. And my story, like so many others, starts with loss.

Take a walk back with me.

My godson, Ka'Saun O'Shane Cain, was killed on the streets of Mount Vernon, New York, in 2009. It was a senseless loss. Then, on February 2, 2012, my student Ramarley Graham was shot by the NYPD inside his apartment in front of his grandmother and six-year-old brother. He was unarmed. The officer stated he had seen the "butt of a gun," but no weapon was ever found.

Ramarley was a quiet, gentle soul. I knew his mother, Constance "Lilmiss" Malcolm, from my time working at Young Scholars Academy. All of that was erased in that one instant. It reminded me that violence was all around on the streets, in our homes, and even in the hands of those who are meant to protect us.

I began attending meetings as a member of Moms Demand Action after Sandy Hook in 2012 and Ramarley's murder. I sat along with Mayor Ernie Davis and other mothers like me who had lost children to violence. What I heard was stories of cold cases, silence, and pain. It pushed me to do even more. The only thing that connected each tragedy? Guns.

Moms Demand Action is pushing for common-sense gun safety laws. Here are some demands:

(1) Hold Glock Responsible for enabling illegal machine gun distribution through their conversion device, the "Glock switch."

(2) Implement Merchant Category Codes for gun stores to detect suspicious gun and ammunition sales.

(3) Educate the Public about New York's safe storage of firearms law through NYSED materials.

(4) Implement the SAVE Act to fund anti-violence education in schools.

(5) Expand Ghost Gun Regulation and eliminate loopholes that exempt 3D-printed and homemade weapons from regulation.

(6) Reform Lockdown Drills in schools by reducing frequency and mandating trauma-informed training for teachers.

Thank You Everytown for Gun Safety Action Fund for your endorsement.
